How to Choose the Right Roofer for You

A roof replacement is a big investment for your home, so it pays to make sure you select the right roofer for the job.

The guide below can help you to ask the right questions when looking for a roofer, and point out the warning signs to stay away from.

Experience

Experience is perhaps the most important quality of a good roofer. With experience comes quality, a greater knowledge of the task at hand, particularly the fine details, and an assurance of a job well done.

A well-experienced roofer will have a strong collection of testimonies from previous clients which tell of their positive experiences with the roofer.

It’s also important to consider if the roofer you’re looking to hire has experience with the particular type of roofing you want. Maybe they have a wealth of experience in slate and tiled roofs, but they’ve worked on very few flat roofs. In this case, it would be better to search for a roofer who has spent a lot more time working on flat roofs.

Quotes

It’s important to get a detailed quote from each roofer you’re considering for the job. A quote should include details of charges for labor, materials, additional tools or equipment to hire, and tax, as well as any other foreseen costs.

Each quote should state whether the rate of pay is per hour, per day, or a flat-rate for the whole job. It should also be explained when any payments are scheduled to be paid so that you can organize your finances accordingly.

You should never pay up front for an entire job, and no good roofer will ask you to. Some may ask for a deposit, typically no more than 25%.

Your quote should also give details on the process and schedule the roofer plans to work from, so you can compare the schedules of each quote you receive. If any of your quotes are missing any of the details, don’t hesitate to ask for them.

Thorough Inspection

When you call a roofer to your home to offer you a quote, it’s good to make note of what they’re doing. A good roofer will go up to your roof and perform a thorough inspection so they can make an informed and accurate quote, and so they can identify any trouble spots which require special attention.

Without a detailed inspection, a roofer cannot make a reliable quote. They could potentially try to sell you on a job which isn’t necessary for your home’s roof. Anybody who makes a quote without having first been up on your roof to inspect should not be trusted to work on your roof.

The roof is an integral component of any home, so it’s important that it’s of great quality, something which can only be achieved by hiring the right roofer for the job.
